Let's be quite clear. The answer is very simple:

Hitler was not an atheist.

(Just a small selection from that link follows)

"I believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator."
[Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, pp. 46]

"What we have to fight for...is the freedom and independence of the fatherland, so that our people may be enabled to fulfill the mission assigned to it by the Creator."
[Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, pp. 125]

"This human world of ours would be inconceivable without the practical existence of a religious belief."
[Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, pp.152]

"Any violence which does not spring from a spiritual base, will be wavering and uncertain. It lacks the stability which can only rest in a fanatical outlook."
[Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, p. 171]

"And the founder of Christianity made no secret indeed of his estimation of the Jewish people. When He found it necessary, He drove those enemies of the human race out of the Temple of God."
[Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, pp.174]

"Catholics and Protestants are fighting with one another... while the enemy of Aryan humanity and all Christendom is laughing up his sleeve."
[Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, pp.309]

"I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord's work."
[Adolph Hitler, Speech, Reichstag, 1936]

"I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so"
[Adolph Hitler, to Gen. Gerhard Engel, 1941]

Hitler and the Nazi party as a whole were deeply, fundamentally religious, and shared far more with the religious right of today than any other sociopolitical group. There is no justification for any of their policies in atheism.

Ratzi, you're a fucking liar. A lying liar. Not that I'm especially surprised at this point.

I am against book burnings. I am permissive of book burnings.

There is no contradiction in those two sentences, because "book burning" is not a clearly defined term.

If people want to buy or otherwise legally acquire copies of particular books, music, films, whatever, and burn them in a symbolic protest, I fully support their right to do so. They are not doing anything to prevent other people from accessing those books, films or music. Preventing someone from this type of protest would be restricting freedom of expression.

The type of book burning I am against is the kind where books are pulled out of libraries, stores, and wherever else they may be found and burned to prevent them falling in the hands of "innocents". That's censorship.

it is increasingly appearing as though I won't be completing my travel diary for The Amazing Adventure 5. Suffice to say that a good time was had by all, and go looking at pictures on Facebook.

So, The cruise is over. I got sick, and went to the hospital, accompanied by the Amazing Randi who bought me breakfast before amusing me with tales while waiting for the hospital to feed me through its system on a busy Monday morning/afternoon.

And now, today, I am flying back to Australia at last. They tell me I won't need to bother with my luggage at any stage, but I guess I'll have to fill out my exit form at LAX.

I'm checked in, anyway, and I got an upgrade to first class for $225 for the leg from Miami to LAX. Looking forward to that, I must say! Haven't gone through security, yet, but I've got a couple of hours before boarding starts, and a couple of bottles of Mike's Hard Lemonade left over. Seems like a perfect calculation, doesn't it.

Wifi is, surprisingly, not free, and I'll be buggered if I'm going to fork out some money just to be able to post a Livejournal entry and check the latest Facebook emails about photo tagging and comments. If you want to see loads of photos of the cruise, Facebook is the place to go. I've uploaded a bunch there, and so have many others.

So, where was I up to here? I believe I haven't posted a full writeup of anything after Friday before the cruise. I may not even have fully written up Friday. No, I haven't:

Things have been pretty hectic, so I haven't found the time to write up the last couple of days' worth of adventuring.

Met up with a bunch of JREF Forumites this morning. We sat and chatted for a while, and then, at Ricks suggestion, a bunch of us went on a Segway tour of a local park. Loads of fun! I have pictures and video. Segways are really, really easy to drive; within minutes I was zooming about, slaleming between some cones that were set up and going wherever I wanted to go. Pictures and video will have to wait to be posted later.

Went to the JREF open house get-together, where I met the Amazing Randi himself, along with Jeff and DJ and loads of others. Afterwards, a large group of us went to a "Tiki house" for dinner and a show. The food was unspectacular and the dancing likewise, but the company more than made up for it.

Now doing some washing. New orange t-shirts ran and coloured my whites. Foolish, I know. Running the whites through the wash again before drying. Hopefully that'll get out the colour.

Getting onto the boat tomorrow. I probably won't be online much during the cruise, if at all.

This afternoon, I drove down to Dania Beach (the actual beach, that is) to meet the Atlantic properly.

So, after spending a couple of hours or so fixing up and editing that last post, and editing again, and again, here I am in my hotel. I have nothing planned for today. Outside it is windy and cloudy, and a little on the cool side for swimming. It's now half-past two, so I suppose I should go find myself some lunch.

Walking around last night, I realised I'm going to have to be very careful crossing roads. All my traffic instincts are wrong. When I step off a curb, I look to the right, but the cars here are coming from the left. I never really realised just how specific some ingrained skills can be.

But first, a shower.

Right. I went and found food, but unfortunately no cider. Started this last night, but kept dozing off while typing. Now that I have eaten and slept, I will tell the tale of my travel travails.

It all started even before I got to Canberra airportCollapse )
